Let's face it, Rodeo Queens are cool. This shot was taken June 4, 2016 just prior to the 81st Tonasket Founders Day Rodeo Parade in Tonasket, WA. It features 2016 Okanogan County Junior Rodeo Queen Erin Quinlan and 2016 Okanogan County Fair Queen Brisa Leep. We've known both from connections in Tonasket and Brisa has been in more than one of the many plank photos featured on this website. 2015 Princeton British Columbia Canada Rodeo Queen Brittany Shopshire has a sense of humour. When I approached her May 30, 2015 just prior to the start of the 80th annual Tonasket Founders Day Rodeo Parade with the request of appearing in a plank photo she did a little improvisation of her own....and we ended up with what will likely go down as one of the Top Three Plank Photos of All-Time! I've had people request I do certain kinds of #plank photos and I've requested some people participate in them but I don't think I've ever had someone actually contact me to be in a #plank photo with me. That changed last week when Steve MacMurdo sent me a message on Facebook saying he'd like to get together for a #plank photo. I thought that was pretty cool as I'm pretty sure Steve thought so, too. So, here it is. I call this the "Stacked #Plank!" and thank you, Steve for the cool request! May 31, 2015
The World's First Ever Video Plank!
Are you ready for this? The World's First Ever Video Plank took place December 5, 2014 in the tiny community of Tonasket in North Central Washington State. My wife Brenda and I were down there celebrating the annual WinterFest where Barley and Quill Hyde of Tonasket had their famous acavallo on display. Children of all ages were welcomed to ride the horses that are part of this massive ship/carousel combination. Brenda cooked up a plan to get me on one and video tape me planking on one of the moving horses. I was not too sure at first but I did eventually warm up to the idea and this is video proof that it did, in fact, take place.
I have decided to call this the 'American Queen Plank!" for good reason - the two smiling beauties in the frame are visiting royalty from Republic, Washington. The plank itself was a bit of work to orchestrate, but lucky for me it all went without a hitch. We approached the girls prior to the start of the Tonasket (WA) Founders Day Parade (May 31, 2014). They were in the drivers/riders seats in the upper front of the stagecoach that became a prop in this photo. I told them what we were up to and if they'd be interested in become part of a plank photo. They were only too happy to get involved but what I didn't realize was that they needed a ladder to get off the stagecoach. They had one, but I was really thinking we may have been expecting too much as the girls looked incredible and the last thing I wanted to do was be the cause of an incident that would bring harm to anyone in the plank photos. Call me paranoid, but I didn't want a planking accident to follow me back to the Border and end up permanently recorded on my passport. The girls were so keen to help the ladder was not an issue and we managed to pull this off. In the photo are: Republic, Washington Princess McKenzie Rugo (left), Republic, Washington Queen Haley McRae (right), Tonasket (WA) Mayor Patrick Plumb (yellow shirt) and that's me making good use of my planking stool as I try hard to keep the international planking rules intact. It only just occurred to me that I'm the token Canadian in this photo and the only one doing a 'legal' plank. What's up with that? Photo: Brenda Engel
This is what I like to call the "Sweet Potato Queen Plank" as it features that largest number of participants in any of my plank photos to date. The Sweet Potato Queens are all in costume on the boat and in front and joining me in a 'dual plank' is my crazy American Plank Pal City of Tonasket (WA) Mayor Patrick Plumb (yellow t-shirt). Also in the photo to the far left is Miss Tonasket Rodeo Queen Brisa Leep and in the boat is 'plank photo bomber' Dennis Walker (bike helmet wearer to the right) who is an old friend and happens to operate www.socountry.ca internet radio in Penticton, British Columbia. I call this the "Half The Man I Used To Be" Plank and it features 2013/14 Miss Tonasket Rodeo Brisa Leep (left) and 2013/14 Princeton Youth Ambassador Carmen Brodie (right) doing the dirty work. This shot, set up oddly enough, by Brent Baker who works at a competing weekly newspaper to mine, was taken during the Winterfest celebration in downtown Tonasket, Washington. Tonasket and Princeton are Sister Cities and I took my travelling plank show down to the 'Merican side of the Border to share some goodwill, a few laughs and to see if I could get away with 'plank bomb' photos in a foreign country (HINT: The short answer is, y'all can so!) which is where I fit into this photo. This is the "FortisBC Power Sense Plank" which features one of the lowest elevation planks I have done. You could say I'm conserving energy by just hovering over the ground. This shot was taken in Keremeos, British Columbia during the annual Similkameen Sizzle pepper festival and would not be possible without the help of my beautiful FortisBC Assistants (Community Ambassadors) Hannah and Laura. Okay, Kids. Do not attempt this at home or without adult supervision. This is what I call the "Playground Plank" for obvious reasons. For those who need to have it explained to them: It's in a school playground. I set this shot up a couple months ago and held on to it until the start of the 2013/14 school season as a reminder to everyone to pay attention and watch for children when you are driving around your community. Remember, school zones are in effect when school is in session. Looking at goofy guys planking in the playground is not a good excuse for not paying attention behind the wheel. August 31, 2013. I call this simply the 'Michael Burgess Outdoor Concert Plank!' Michael Burgess was in the Canadian cast of Les Miserables, is a Gemini Award winning star of stage and screen, has been honoured with the Queen's Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee Medals, Distinguished Canadian Leadership Award, the Order of Ontario and has been inducted into the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. During the pre-concert sound check I got the go ahead for this plank. On piano to the left of the stage is Pianist Carol Colpitts with Michael at the microphone at centre stage. I suspect he's wondering what I'm doing, although he did give the okay for this only moments before it happened. The concert, by the way, was incredible. The 'Holistic Mid-Air Arm Wrestle Plank!' with Registered Holistic Nutritionist Raina Dawn Lutz performed live in-studio at socountry.ca. What makes this such a cool plank photo is that although you can't see it, both of us are actually planking on office chairs. Let's face it, an internet radio station broadcast booth isn't going to be very big, but we pulled it off! My thanks to my new friend Raina Dawn for being such a good sport. The annual Show 'n' Shine took place downtown on July 6, 2013. A 'plank challenge' was issued a couple weeks ago for a plank in a car lot. I thought, why not in front of a row of classic cars during the Show 'n' Shine? So I asked a buddy who owns the sweet blue 1956 Ford Custom Line to snap a photo assuring him his car would be in it. I call this my 'Random Guy Plank' simply because the guy at the right is some random guy who was sitting at the table before I planked on it. The interesting part about this photo is that it also contains Patrick Plumb (in yellow). He is the Mayor of Tonasket, Washington. He becomes the second political figure to appear in one of my planking photos, and lucky for Patrick, he is the first-ever American elected official. Way to do Uncle Sam proud! I call this my "Political Plank!" as it features the first-ever appearance of an elected official in one of my plank photos. In this case, Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart who represents our region in Victoria, British Columbia. I thought a fun photo could help her with her public relations. This is the 'Similkameen Falls Plank!' where I am perched on the cement highway blocks along Highway 3 about 20-kilometres West of Princeton, British Columbia, Canada. This was not an easy shot to get as traffic is normally whizzing by on both lanes here and there is not much room to get in position for a photo.
